Unions Backing Seattle Students' Strike

If this is higher education today, our nation is in trouble.

Student "organizers" at the University of Washington are calling on students to skip classes on Thursday afternoon to protest tuition hikes and budget cuts.
The idea is to shut down parts of the campus for a half day, said Jennifer Fletcher, a graduate student and spokeswoman for the coalition.

The coalition wants teaching assistants and professors to forgive students who skip their Thursday classes, Fletcher said.

Fletcher said the strike has the support of the university's union locals representing teaching assistants, tutors, custodians plus administrative and technical workers.

"This is to show the workers that they have some power. ... If there aren't any students in class, the university can't teach," Fletcher said.

...And if they can't teach without students, then perhaps the budget cuts are warranted and there is less need for the university's local unions.

Talk about dumb.
